When the Thrill Gets to Your Head
Spending a day at the races is a cool way to unwind. There's something very relaxing about anticipating a win (or a loss) when you wager on a particular horse. Nothing beats the thrill of giving an earsplitting shout just to egg your horse on to the finish line. Perhaps the relaxation afforded by betting at the races can be likened to a balloon blown to its full size with the air slowly released. In the end, air gets totally released and the balloon grows limp and relaxed. Similarly, as the horse nears the finish line, you feel yourself getting emptied of all the stresses until finally, you feel totally stress-free.
Like any leisure activity that recharges an individual, spending some time at the races also has the same effect. When you win a wager, "feel good" hormones get released into your system and has the effect of relieving you of pressures accumulated throughout one week of work.
Recreational betting is healthy because you bet to have fun. You cheer your heart out and whether you win or lose doesn't matter since you have a budget for your bets. Losing is expected and winning is an added bonus.
However, when Lady Luck has been especially kind and you're winning more than what you expected you would, this heady feeling of victory can be intoxicating. If you're not wary, it could lead you to a phenomenon known as thrill betting. This means you continue to bet recklessly, not mindful that you're already betting beyond your set funds for that particular day. Once you start to lose, you don't stop but continue betting to get back the losses. You begin to get reckless and instead of having a great time, you end up angry and full of negativity.
Don't get the thrill get to your head. Remember that you're in the races to relax and unwind. Wager to have fun so you can leave the racetrack in high spirits and your pocket intact.
