What are the Running Styles of Racehorses?

If you're still new to horse handicapping, you're probably still in the process of familiarizing yourself with the terms, symbols, letters and figures on a racing program. Part of the information given there that makes a great difference on your ultimate pick for the horse with the potential to win is understanding how a horse runs on the track.

The four running styles of horses are E++, E/P, P++ and S. Let's examine each style one by one:

  1. E++ or Early Front Runners are horses that start out in the lead. They are frontrunners who immediately make a break for the top position as soon as the gate opens. If you study videos of Early Front Runners, you'll see that they are usually out front, way ahead of the other racers.
  2. E/P are also horses who like to get ahead early in the race. Unlike E++ horses, however, they don't really need to be in the lead to win a race. They can run a little behind but can close the gap in the final seconds of the competition.
  3. P++ or Pressers are those who run with the pack. They stay with the rest of the other horses for the most part of the race and then, just when you thought they couldn't possibly go any faster, they amaze everyone by "pressing in" for the lead and sometimes, winning the race. They are also called "closers."
  4. S or Stalkers also run right together with the pack. They blend together with the herd, like stalkers but slowly, they inch their way to the front without others noticing it. Unlike Pressers who charge their way at the tail end of the race, Stalkers sneak up the ladder in an unobtrusive yet steady manner. Much to the surprise of those who were caught unawares, they can and do grab the win in races, especially in long-distance competitions.
Now that you know these four running styles, you have an idea as to how a horse will run in a particular race. This will lead you closer to betting on the winning one.
