Managing Your Money on While Betting

Horse betting can be a fun recreational activity. However, it can easily turn addictive that can put a dent in your pocket. Money management is important since you cannot possibly repeat this fun experience if you're already dead broke. Habits that lead to betting more than you can afford, for example, should be avoided at all costs so you can enjoy wagering at the horse races for a longer time.

Here are some tips to keep yourself from financial ruin as you bet at the races:

  1. You must always have separate funds or a separate bank account for your bets, especially if you are going to be at the races regularly. Never use your debit or credit card to cover your bets. This is not only unsound, it leads you to financial ruin since there's a very real possibility of making you lose track of your bets. Deposit any winnings you make there too. By having separate funds, you will be able to keep track of your betting and you will know if you are making a profit or losing in your wagers.
  2. Don't bet money you cannot afford to lose. This is the reason why you must have funds specifically set aside for betting. Be sure you set limits for your wagers for a particular race day so that if you're really having a losing streak, you'll know when to end and still can live to bet another day.
  3. Don't chase your losses. This only leads to more losses. For example, if you bet $10 on Horse A and lost, you try to make up for your loss by betting $17 on Horse B who you believe is a sure winner. You could be lucky, but what if Horse B loses? So you bet $27 on who you believe is another sure winner. What if your horse loses again? You'll have lost $37 just to chase an original $10 wager. Foolhardy, don't you think?
  4. Always have a betting strategy. For example, if you have a $100 set aside on your betting bank, you can divide it to 50 units at $2 per bet. Don't immediately change your strategy just because you hear that a horse has a particularly strong chance of winning. It's still a gamble and even the best equine still stands an equal chance of losing as he has winning.
  5. Don't place bets when under the influence. You know alcohol makes you careless, reckless and stupid.

Avoid these bad betting habits and you'll get to enjoy more races.

Happy punting!
