How to Bet at the Racetrack
Spending a day at the racetrack can be fun and exciting if you know how to place your wager. After all, where's the fun in watching horses race if you don't pick your favorite? Even if you only place a minimum $2 wager, the thrill of cheering your horse on is enough motivation for you to learn how to place it.
It's actually a simple process. Follow these and you'll surely have fun at the races!
- Get hold of a racing program.
- Choose the horse you wish to bet on. Use the racing program to determine his number since you will be placing a bet on the horse using his number and not his name.
- Determine the type of wager you wish to place. There are many types of bets available but if you're a total newbie, you can choose the most basic types. Place a straight bet if there's a particular horse your gut tells you will win first place. A place bet is one where your horse finishes either first or second while a show bet still makes you win if the horse you wager on finishes first, second or third.
- Determine how much you will bet. Most tracks will take a minimum $2 bet. If you're still learning the ropes, stick with the minimum, unless you have the money to burn.
- Go to the window to place your wager. Look at the signs carefully since there's a window that receives only $50 minimum bet. Line up at the beginner's window so you can't go wrong. Make sure that you already have your money and the information you need to tell the teller in step 5 so you don't inconvenience other bettors by holding up the line. It's recommended to write these down.
- Specifically inform the teller the track name, race number, the amount of your bet, the type of wager you're placing and the horse's betting number.
- Get your ticket from the teller and review that it is correct before you leave the window.
- Watch the races and cheer your horse to the finish line!
- If you win, make sure to collect your money.
Have fun at the races!
